Every day about 400 trucks unload waste into a silo at Amagerforbrænding. Here it is lifted by cranes to the top of the plant’s firing shafts. Via the shafts, the waste slides onto the oven floors where moving grids lead the burning waste forward.
The heat from the waste incineration is used for heating water to high pressure steam. The steam is used to produce produce electricity and district heating. About 20 percent of the steam is converted to electricity, while the rest of the energy is used to heat water for the district heating system.
During the incineration, the pollution in the waste is passed on to flue gas and the slag left after the incineration is completed. The flue gas is cleansed in several stages before being released through the chimney. The residue product is shipped to Norway for deposit.
After the incineration, about 20 percent of residue waste is left. This is calles slag. The slag from the ovens is cleansed of metals for recycling and utilised in construction work where specific environmental requirements are met. Amagerforbrænding is often the host of school classes learing about waste management. If you wish to have a tour of the plant, please contact us.
